In the area where Oud-Empel is located, traces of both Roman and Frankish habitation have been found. Even the remains of a temple, called the Temple of Empel, date from the Roman period. The oldest mention is in a document dated 25 October 856, in which Lotharius I confirms the donation of the Empla domain to the Benedictine abbey of Crespin. The original document, a deed of donation by King Clovis IV from an estimated 690-694, was lost. In 1142 and 1146, the donation was confirmed again by Pope Innocent II and Roman King Conrad III respectively. As far as can be determined, the church has always been dedicated to Saint Landelinus, the first abbot of the abbey of Crespin. Around 1200, a battle raged between Duke Hendrik I of Brabant and Count Otto I of Gelre. Hendrik won the battle and took over the provostship of Empel from the abbey of Crespin, to secure the northern border of his duchy. Source and more info: Wikipedia

Oud-Empel is a dike village in the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch, in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. It is a district of the Maaspoort district. Oud-Empel belonged to the municipality of Empel en Meerwijk until 1 April 1971. That municipality was incorporated into the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch. Until the Second World War, the village was simply called Empel, but that name was changed to the current Empel after the vast majority of the residents had moved there. In 2009, a start was made with renovating the recreational area around the Oosterplas. A new waterfront has been created, paths have been renewed, new paths have been built, the beach area has been renovated with new sand and new changing areas. From May to September, the new beach pavilion offers space for catering and the supervisors of the municipality (Mon to Fri) and Bossche Rescue Brigade (weekend). De Heinis is a street and nature reserve in 's-Hertogenbosch. The name is reflected in a street name in Rosmalen. The Heinis is one of the few remaining parts of the winter dike of the Maas. Pieces of winter dike can also be seen at Bruggen, Rosmalen. The old dike ran all the way to Orthen. The dike was severed by the arrival of the A2. The dike was constructed in the 14th century and was the south side of the Polder van der Eigen and the catchment area of the Beerse Maas. The area has often suffered from flooding. The wheels that are still there are silent witnesses to this. The dike was part of the line during the Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1629. The Heinis is sandwiched by industrial estates and the various neighborhoods of 's-Hertogenbosch. This makes the Heinis a unique part of 's-Hertogenbosch. The Heinistuin is now a varied area with different biotopes/landscape elements. Such as open grassland, swamp forest, dike forest, thicket of blackberry and willow.
