Nice area to walk.

You quickly cycle past it and the hiking trail is a little further away, but it is a beautiful piece of wet nature.

For a long time, observation was the main guide to understanding nature, and sometimes a very special, and in our view rather strange, assumption emerged from this. Such as the observation that chopped or sawn-off alder wood that is exposed to the air turns orange-red. People used to think that the tree bled, and so the superstition arose that the Alder was the embodiment of an evil spirit, it was a dangerous devilish tree: People believed that red flames danced around the wood at night: “Red hair and alder buds, the devil can stop his stockings with..., because people with red hair were also distrusted, which is evident from the sayings: red hair and alder wood are not built on good ground and: red beard, the devil's nature. Yet the idea arose that the Els could be used for injuries. Celtic warriors used parts of the Els for wound care. A gruesome Celtic legend even tells that “a dead woman cut into pieces was brought back to life with the help of Alder wood.” The German word Erle means alder tree and in 1782 the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote a legend about the Alder: der Erlkönig. Franz Schubert incorporated the text into a ballad that tells the sad story of a father who rides home on horseback at night with his son in his arms. The boy (who is probably critically ill) sees the alder king in his fever dreams, a symbol of death, who tries to lure him to the 'other side'. The frightened child calls to his father for help. The Alder King tries again, eventually threatening to take the child away by force. When the father and child arrive at their destination, the boy appears to have died. He succumbed to the alder king. Not only Schubert, musicians in our time (Rammstein) are also inspired by this text by Goethe.

On the other side of the pond, two willows were in the water until the end of February 2024. One of them was gnawed down by a beaver in December 2023. The stump of the tree is still there and the trunks are on the edge of the grove. The beaver is a protected mammal and likes to eat leaves, twigs and bark of willow and poplar in winter. He also likes the rhizomes of water lilies, for example. In summer, beavers eat many herbaceous aquatic and terrestrial plants. Several beaver tracks can be found in Lindenholt. Just pay attention! In summer you can see beavers in the evening. In winter they are almost only active in the dark.

Some impressions of this water-rich area

Kapsalon Esther, Agnetenweg 65, built in 1916 as a house and forge by Jan Derks (alias Jan de Smid) and purchased by blacksmith Jan Haarkens in 1945, once caused a lot of commotion. On February 3, 1950, the blacksmith was working early with three young workers when a huge explosion killed three of them (and seriously injured the fourth – a worker). Fortunately, the family members living there were spared, but the devastation was enormous. Afterwards it turned out that during the forging of pasture posts and fences from old war material, a pipe bomb with trotyl, which was in such an iron tube, had detonated, as they were also used to blow up casemates. The forge – so necessary for a village – was continued by a cousin.

On the corner of Agnetenweg and Nieuwstadweg there is an old shop building that once bore the name Klavertje Vier. There was a café on the corner around 1900; to the left of it the Spar, to the right of the café was an electric mill for the harvested grain from the village area. And behind that was a bakery. The mill was the first building here with electricity. There is currently a partial ban on use of the building, with the exception of the well-functioning waste center. Opposite it is the access to a large plot where - after much initial protest - the first, much-needed care center has now been built, by the De Waalboog healthcare institution. It offers space for 45 residential units. The care workers will also provide care to local residents who stay at home.

Start of the GPS circular walk Lindenholt is at the Zwanenstraat/Agnetenweg three-way junction (formerly the Dorpsstraat of Neerbosch). The Agnetenweg is the base of Lindenholt, in 1300 people started to mine the area from here. The name Agnetenweg was chosen after the construction of the Maas-Waal Canal, when the Dorpsstraat was excavated. Agneten refers to Agnieten, nuns who had a monastery a few hundred meters away. The associated monastery farm was located at Agnetenweg 119, but went up in flames in 1977 (when the monastery itself had disappeared for centuries). At that height, the Agnetenweg was called Nonnenstraat by local residents. On the other corner of the crossroads is Het Zwaantje (1864), which started as a farm and later also became a village café. The church on the other side is called the Agnes Church.
