St. Nicholas Chapel in the Lainz Game Reserve, also known as the Nikolaikapelle, is one of Vienna's oldest surviving religious buildings. It was likely built at the end of the 12th century and first documented in 1321. Originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas, it was probably connected to a medieval fortification, the remains of which are still visible. Over the centuries, the chapel underwent several alterations, fell into disrepair at times, and was deconsecrated at the end of the 18th century. After the area became part of the Lainz Game Reserve, the chapel was restored between 1835 and 1837, acquiring its present appearance. Today, it is a significant Romanesque structure and a historical testament to medieval architecture within the protected natural environment of the Lainz Game Reserve.

Nice resting place, but not in midsummer

The nature trail leads from the information center through a picturesque forest path to the historic Hermesvilla. It extends through the villa's lovingly landscaped garden, passes the Hohenau Pond, and ends back at the information center. Along this trail, information panels provide information about the typical tree species of the Vienna Woods, the fascinating differences between horn and antler, and wild bees and honey bees. Topics such as the habitat of deadwood, the importance of soil, and tree roots are also addressed. Neophytes, the "aliens" among native plants, are also featured. Interactive stations invite visitors to test their skills, while seating areas invite visitors to linger.

The central figure of the fountain, created by Austrian sculptor Viktor Oskar Tilgner in 1886, is interpreted as a wood nymph or the goddess Artemis/Diana. This elegant depiction lends the water basin a mystical aura and reflects the spirit of the time, in which the glorification of nature and mythological themes were central elements of architecture and art.

The Hubertuswarte is a historic observation tower in the Lainz Tiergarten park, offering impressive panoramic views of Vienna and the surrounding forests. Named after Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters, the lookout is a popular vantage point for hikers and nature lovers. From here, you can enjoy the natural beauty and, on clear days, glimpse all the way to the Alps.

The riding school wing of the Hermesvilla in the Lainz Tiergarten was originally the stable and riding area for Empress Elisabeth's horses. Located in the left wing of the villa's courtyard, it was equipped with original stable furnishings, including partition walls for the boxes and stalls. Particularly noteworthy is the so-called "rondeau," a circular structure with a diameter of approximately 20 meters, in which the horses could be lunged in bad weather. This area was used as a summer stable for the Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School from the 1950s until 2005. Today, the riding school wing is not open to the public, but remains an important testament to the imperial equestrian tradition and the history of the Hermesvilla.

The Genoveva Fountain near the Hermesvilla in the Lainz Tiergarten is a Baroque fountain created in 1885 by the Austrian sculptor Viktor Tilgner. It is located in the courtyard of the Hermesvilla, a former Habsburg hunting lodge that now serves as a museum. The fountain depicts the scene of Genoveva of Brabant being rescued by a doe—a motif that reflects the Romantic longing for nature and freedom. The Genoveva Fountain is a striking example of 19th-century art and a worthwhile stop for art and history buffs.
