The Marie Curie Gymnasium in Wittenberge looks back on a long history. Founded in 1895 as a private boys' secondary school, it developed over the years into a significant educational institution in the region. Established as a private boys' school in 1895, it was transferred to municipal ownership in 1898. The main building (Building 1) was constructed between 1899 and 1900 according to plans by Wittenberge's city architect, Friede Everhard Bruns. With its striking brick architecture, St. Henry's Church is an integral part of Wittenberge. Built in 1898 in the Neo-Romanesque style, it was later redesigned in the 1970s by the Dresden sculptor Friedrich Press after suffering war damage. The building remains a testament to Wittenberge's economic importance in Elbe River trade.

In Roman mythology, Veritas is the goddess of truth, but in Wittenberge, this name is associated with the rich industrial history of the sewing machine factory of the same name. The factory is now history, and the painful dismantling of local industry is also part of the story. The mural represents all aspects of this development: memory and hope are held in balance.
