The Upper Gate provides access to and from the old town of Ilanz. It was built in the Middle Ages and was one of four gates providing access to the town. Today, two of these city gates still exist: the beautifully painted Upper Gate and the more modest Red Gate.

The structure was built in 1717, and two baroque spheres proclaim the Christmas message. In the center field are the coats of arms of the Three Leagues. Directly above the archway is the city's coat of arms. Other coats of arms include those of the Capols, Salis, Schmid von Grüneck, and the coats of arms of Zurich and Bern with the text: IN HONOREM POT. DOM ORUM TUGINORUM ET BERNATUM HOC GRATTUDINIS MONUMENTUMPOSUIT JOH. GAUD. SCHMIDIUS DE GRUEN. PRAET. TIR AO MDCCXVII., in gratitude for his help in renovating the gate in 1717. The upper gate in the old town of Ilanz, also known as Porta Sura in Romansh, is richly decorated and painted. The ground floor, the actual entrance to the town, dates from 1513.

In Wali (1,710 meters) you can take a break in the inn of the same name and fortify yourself with regional dishes. Perfect for an energy stop on your bike tour. The gondola starts in Wali up to the summit of the Stein at an altitude of 2,170 meters.

A wonderful gravel path leads you over Alp Sezner, while your gaze wanders over the beautiful landscape at an altitude of 2,000 meters. If you need a short break, you can look for a shady spot near the buildings along the way.

The Bündner Rigi mountain inn is located on Piz Mundaun and was built in 1902. It is at an altitude of 1,618 meters - so you are guaranteed a break with a great view and a cheese slice or Capun. The inn is a wonderful stop on your way uphill. It is also one of the first inns in the Surselva.
