The Isar River, sometimes wild, sometimes tame

Between the Isar river and the Isar canal you will find many peaceful, natural places with views of the water.

There's also a beer garden at the lake where you can refuel (check opening hours!). If you prefer something a little quieter, you can find a spot on the shore at the northern end, for example. When I was there in early October, the lake wasn't too busy despite the excellent weather, and there were plenty of dragonflies flitting around, and you could watch birds catching fish. It's perfect for enjoying nature without having to drive or hike far from the city.

Isar (River), Munich At 300 km long, the Isar is the longest river in Munich. After the Danube, the Inn, and the Main, the Isar is the fourth-longest river in Bavaria. It originates in Austria in the Karwendel Mountains near Scharnitz. Between Mittenwald and Krün, at river kilometer 251.5, it is dammed by five meters by the Krün weir to reach the Isar Reservoir, 870 m above sea level. From there, it is diverted into a canal to produce energy, leaving a minimum residual flow of between 3 and 4.8 m³/s to Lake Walchen. It then flows through Landshut, Dingolfing, Landau an der Isar, and Plattling, among other places. After a total length of 295 kilometers, it flows into the Danube northeast of Munich and southeast of Deggendorf near Moos. Its two largest tributaries are the Loisach and the Amper. St. Emmeram's Bridge, Munich, officially inaugurated on May 13, 2005 St. Emmeram (Emmeran), one of the Three Apostles of Bavaria and Bishop of Poitiers, worked in Bavaria around 700. He founded a monastery in Regensburg, from which the former Imperial Abbey of St. Emmeram emerged. He was martyred in Kleinhelfendorf (south of Aying) in 716, falsely accused. He was initially buried in Aschheim and later transferred to Regensburg. Feast of the Catholic saint: September 22. Notes on the bridge: The 96 m long wooden truss bridge, built on this site in 1978, was completely destroyed by arson in 2002. In 2003, the city council decided to rebuild the bridge on the same site. The new bridge is a delicate truss structure made of wood and steel and is covered over its entire length.
