Wismar Town Hall, like other Neo-Classical town halls in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, was planned and designed by court architect Johann Georg Barca and built between 1817 and 1819. The east wing was severely damaged during World War II. After the Second World War, the damage was repaired, and the heavy-looking façade was slightly reworked and smoothed in keeping with the systematic architecture of Socialist Neo-Classicalism. The western section of the new building still retains older vaults and masonry remnants of the predecessor building from the second half of the 14th century.
