Unfortunately, the old mill is falling into disrepair over time, but the charm of bygone years is still clearly recognizable.

The mill pond is very shallow here, and at high water levels, the area can be flooded. It's more of a swamp than a moor. The boardwalk definitely helps you get around the mill pond even at higher water levels.

The grounds of the former mill are not accessible. However, you can see the ruins from the road and the eastern side. East of the ruins is also a beautiful lake-sized pond.

From here, you can see a small island in the Viereggenhöfer Pond. It's probably smaller than the Langenwerder bird sanctuary. However, you can see the birds from the shore. It's not a bad idea to bring binoculars, though. The path along the shore was a dead end in June 2025 due to the blackberry bushes to the northwest.

Great path around the lake, only too few rest stops

A walk around the mill pond is well worth it, with narrow paths, a wooden boardwalk and beautiful nature.

The Wallensteingraben is a connecting ditch between Lake Schwerin and the Baltic Sea in Wismar. Its approximately 20-kilometer-long course overcomes a height difference of 37.8 meters. The watercourse so named today consists of the artificially created outflow of Lake Schwerin and the largely original course of the stream once called Stivine (or Steffine or Stevina, depending on the source). A canal built in the 16th century, which shortened the course of the stream over large sections, fell into disrepair just a few years after its construction.

The small bird sanctuary island of Langenwerder lies at the entrance to the Salzhaff in the northeast of the Baltic Sea island of Poel. Langenwerder, a small island off the northeast coast of Poel, is Mecklenburg's first seabird sanctuary. Even back then, the "Jordsand" association recognized that breeding oystercatchers, gadwalls, and meadow pipits needed to be protected just as much as gulls and terns. Migratory seabirds also received a natural refuge on Langenwerder. These feathered guests can be observed with binoculars from Gollwitz or on one of the rare but popular guided tours. Outside of the breeding season, from the end of July to October, guided tours also take place on Langenwerder. Furthermore, many amateur researchers, collectors, and explorers can be found on the coasts and beaches of Poel at any time of year.
