Gerlingen is an old wine village with historic farmhouses and the birthplace of the remarkable missionaries (Zimmermann) who discovered Mount Kilimanjaro. Also, the graves of Schiller's father and Friedrich's sister are located at St. Peter's Church. Two very good ice cream parlors.

Breitwiesensee was built in 1989 to protect against flooding, particularly for the Breitwiesen School and the "Breitwiesen" senior living complex. This is its primary function. However, the lake has also become a popular destination for walkers. With numerous seating areas, it invites you to linger in nice weather.

Erected in 1957 by the sculptor and honorary citizen of Gerlingen, Fritz von Graevenitz. The artist chose the horse as the ornament of this fountain in memory of the farmer and wagon driver Gottlieb Grob. In front of his house at Hauptstrasse 55, there once stood a well with a trough where Grob washed his white horse.

A church in Gerlingen was first mentioned in 1275. The oldest part of today's St. Peter's Church is the 35-meter-high tower. The impressive nave was built between 1463 (the date is on the northwest gable end to the left of the entrance) and after 1495 by the workshop of Peter von Koblenz and Hans Wunderer von Pfaffenhofen. After 1500, a vaulted sacristy was added to the south side of the chancel. A spouted stone protruding from the northern tower wall recalls that the vaulted ground floor of the tower had previously served as a sacristy.

Gerlingen's oldest building and arguably the oldest ridge-post house in southwest Germany, built in 1417/18. This construction method was not built floor upon floor, but rather the beams (ridge posts) running from bottom to top in the center of the house supported the ridge of the roof. After the building's renovation in 1993, the structure is still clearly visible only in the soot-blackened roof truss. As early as the 16th century, the northwest corner was cut off for the construction of the churchyard wall. The manor house of the early village had probably stood on this elevated site since the Alemannic conquest.

As early as the 12th century, the Hirsau Monastery in Gerlingen owned three acres (approximately 1 hectare) of vineyards, and a wine press was documented as early as 1399. The large wine press, featuring six presses with oak "trees," stood here until 1885. In the village map of 1831, its layout is even larger than St. Peter's Church. In 1624, another press was mentioned in the basement of the Old Town Hall, which was removed when the new town hall was built in 1828. In 1731, despite the consequences of the Thirty Years' War, there were still around 140 hectares of vineyards in Gerlingen. Due to increasing competition from fruit growing with cider production and the infestation of the vineyards with powdery mildew, the vineyard area shrank to just 30 hectares by the end of the First World War. Today, there are approximately 7 hectares in the Lettlenberg, Rote Halde, and Tal vineyards.

Semi-detached winegrowers' houses from the 16th and 17th centuries with a shared covered courtyard entrance, deep cellars, and barns in the courtyard. The barn in the courtyard of Nos. 18/20, demolished in 1989, bore the inscription "The barn is in God's hands. The Lord protected it from fire and fire in 1602 H.S." Each half had a separate staircase, its own cellar, and its own barn at the rear of the courtyard. Further semi-detached houses of this type have been preserved at Hirschstraße 3/3a and Hauptstraße 70.
