St. Mary's Church in Schönkirchen is an early Gothic hall church made of hewn fieldstone. Inside it contains an altar by the woodcarver Hans Gudewerdt the Younger. It belongs to the parish of Schönkirchen in the Altholstein church district in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany. The brick-built mensa of the altar probably dates from the time of its construction.[11] The carved altarpiece is a work by the Eckernförde sculptor Hans Gudewerdt the Younger. It is carved from oak and is considered a masterpiece of the cartilage baroque. In 1653 the altarpiece was placed in the church as a gift from "Diderich Blom" from the Dobersdorf estate and his second wife "F Anna Blomen", née von Pogwisch, and in memory of his first wife "F Elisabet Blomen DGG" (= May God be gracious), née von Rumohr, who died in 1620. The names of the donors can be found in ribbons next to their coats of arms above the main image. Diedrich von Blome (1587–1663) and his two wives are buried in the church's crypt. Gudewerdt is said to have worked on the altarpiece for five years.[12] He marked the year of completion on the front of his work and signed it on the back.
