Saint Lawrence, to whom the church in Amstetten is dedicated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was Archdeacon of the Pope and was summoned by the pagan Emperor Valerian to hand over the Church's treasure. Lawrence asked for three days, during which time he distributed the Church's wealth among the poor inhabitants of Rome. After the appointed time, he returned with the poor to the Emperor to present them as the Church's treasure. He was then martyred. Legend has it that he was roasted alive on a gridiron—an attribute seen in many depictions of Saint Lawrence—over coals. He is said to have been cheerful during this ordeal and asked his executioner if he would turn him over. Saint Lawrence's feast day in the liturgical calendar is August 10.

The historic workers' settlement in Kuchen was commissioned by the factory owner Arnold Staub and built between 1858 and 1887. 🍞 At the Bakehouse – Tradition Preserved in Amstetten-Dorf The small bakehouse in Amstetten-Dorf is a typical example of Swabian baking culture from bygone days. In the past, bread, braided yeast bread, and flatbreads were regularly baked here together – an important meeting place for the village community. Even today, the bakehouse is still occasionally used, for example, during village festivals or special events. The aroma of fresh wood-fired bread evokes memories of times gone by. 💡 Tip: If you arrive at the right time, you can sometimes even peek inside or sample fresh bread straight from the oven on baking days. A short stop is definitely worthwhile to discover a piece of local tradition.

Since there's a new bike path on the ascent side, the Geislinger Steige can finally be recommended. Coming from the top, you have to turn off towards Türkheim to catch the start, otherwise you won't be able to find it. From below, it's much harder to miss it 😜
