Citizens' Mill on the Rems River (Bürgermühlenweg 7) The 'Upper' or 'Citizens' Mill,' also known as the 'Hahn Mill' after its last owner, is one of the few buildings that survived the great city fire of 1634 unscathed and is thus one of the oldest buildings still standing in the old town. The first documented mention of a mill on this site dates back to the 13th century. The coat of arms with the year and a double 'W' above the portal below the church bridge commemorates the fact that the mill was rebuilt in 1574 and that the city of Waiblingen received the property as a fief from Württemberg. Floods, low water levels, and especially log driving often hampered its operation, so that the Citizens' Mill was only operational for about nine months of the year. Privately owned since 1806, the mill was converted into an art mill in 1857 and expanded in 1868 with a large addition (demolished in 1990). Milling operations ceased in 1918. In 1972, the city purchased the property, including the two associated mill islands (today known as 'Große Erleninsel' and 'Kleine Erleninsel'). The municipal utilities refurbished the old waterwheel for demonstration purposes, and electricity is now generated here via a turbine in the millrace. Apothecary and Parish Garden Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Apothecary and Parish Gardens in Waiblingen's city center, located next to and below St. Nicholas Church, are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April 1st to November 30th. At the Bädertörle (Little Baths Gate) The open wall walk along the millrace with the bridge to the Rems islands is one of the most beautiful sections of the city wall. The name "Bädertörle" (Little Baths Gate) comes from the medieval bathhouses (Große Badhofstatt and Kleine Badhofstatt) that once stood here. The Rems River supplied the water for the public baths at the Bädertörle. The alleyway was called Badgasse (Bath Alley) until 1974. Flood marks are marked outside the gate. The new wooden footbridge leads to Erleninsel (Alder Island) and to the Talaue (community center), the city's "green lung." City Fortifications Construction of the city wall began around 1250 and lasted approximately 30 years. Significant remnants have survived in the area of the High Watchtower and the Winegrowers' Suburb. Former Fellbach Gate (near Lange Straße 61) The most important entrance to the fortified city was once the Fellbach Gate, also known as the Esslingen or Stuttgart Gate. It stood on the inner city wall, on the city-bound side of the building at Lange Straße 61 (see the marking in the pavement). In front of the Fellbach Gate, where the bustling "Alte Postplatz" (Old Post Office Square) is located today, there used to be a stagecoach station. Here, visitors arrived and goods were exchanged. The tower also served as a prison at times. The appearance of the Fellbach Gate tower is only vaguely preserved from old city views. It was demolished in the 1830s so that "...more air and light could enter the city...". The tower originally had a hipped roof, which was converted into a pointed roof during the renovation of the timber-framed structure in 1749. On the exterior was the coat of arms of Count Ulrich V (before 1480), the so-called "Ulrich's Coat of Arms," which was salvaged when the gate was demolished and added to the heraldic collection of Count Wilhelm of Württemberg, later Duke of Urach. Since then, it has adorned the inner entrance of Lichtenstein Castle in the Swabian Alps. A copy now hangs above the entrance to the outer bailey at Lange Straße 61.
