Within the city limits, the Kermisdahl changes its name and becomes the navigable Spoy Canal, which flows into the Rhine via the Old Rhine near Schenkenschanz. The Spoy Canal, begun around 1400 by the city of Kleve, was further excavated and made navigable again during the governorship of Johann Moritz from 1647 to 1679. It is the oldest still navigable canal in Germany.

The Kermisdahl, the old river channel near Kleve, was known in the Middle Ages as "den alde Rijn," and the city wall surrounding Kleve along the waterway was called the "Rheinmauer." "Kermisdael" was initially a field name on the moraine ridge. The name gradually migrated down the hill and eventually came to refer to the body of water. The Kermisdahl is fed by surface water from the ridge and by the drainage ditch "Wetering," which begins near "Haus Horst."
