Very well described by 365°. Our tip: tackle the first section by rafting. The team even took our bikes to the exit. In summer, the route is about 8 km long and manageable for average athletes; in spring, even longer. The road was also manageable. Even with two people.

The surface is good in itself, it was just laid too sparingly. No shoulder, sometimes 20-30cm of space but often right next to the guard rail. The central reservation is also fitted with bollards to make wild overtaking impossible, with the result that everyone leaves a good meter of safety distance from the posts, thus giving up 1m of the road. However, there is still enough space for cars and even small trucks to overtake a cyclist without an accident, and that has always worked well. It's a different story with trucks, they only get past if we move onto the shoulder (which is usually non-existent). It works like this: the truck honks briefly, and then we have to wait and see where we are. In short: pure torture, unfortunately again with no alternative, which is due to the terrain. Oh yes: the gorge is great in terms of scenery, but you can't see any of it because you have to concentrate fully on the road.

Finish Parcours #TCRNo9 // Thessaloniki

TCRNo9 finishes on the shores of the Aegean Sea, where the city of Thessaloniki marks the end of the adventure for our successful riders, having started thousands of kilometres away on the edge of western Europe. The history of the city is a rich tapestry of radicalism and anarchy, borne from its place on the historical frontier of Europe and Asia, and mirrored in the architecture we see today. At its heart lies the White Tower, which in its various guises — Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Greek — has stood witness to this transient border since the 12th Century. Here our riders will finish, and have the opportunity to dip their wheels into the Aegean, signalling the end of their Transcontinental journey, and the chance to rest their weary bodies.

The monastery or hermitage of Timios Prodormos was built according to the architectural model of the Xenophontos Abbey of Athos on the upper side of the village of Acritochori, at the foot of Mount Kerkini (Belles). The Hermitage is located on the international hiking trail 54/6 and offers a panoramic view over Lake Kerkini. It falls under the sacred metropolis of Sidirokastro and today (1997) 40 nuns live there engaged in hagiography, priestly handwork, traditional weaving and gold embroidered pieces.
