A former oxbow of the Werra near Schwebda is a former river loop that was separated from the main stream in the middle of the 19th century by an artificial straightening of the Werra. In order to protect the area, which has become a habitat for a variety of bird species, an eight-hectare area was declared a nature reserve in 1987.
