Along the former inner-German border, 1,339 km of column paths, mostly made of perforated concrete slabs measuring 300x100x19 cm, were built. At that time, concrete slabs made it possible to build a road quite quickly, easily and durable, without asphalting an entire street.

Calcareous tuff springs, like here in Elfengrund, are an unusual, rare habitat that needs to be protected. They occur in areas where the groundwater is heavily enriched with dissolved lime. The waterfall in Elfengrund is one of the largest tufa springs in Hesse. The Gatterbach, which rises from nearby springs, has over time piled up the limestone tuff on mosses and formed steps for waterfalls through the constant supply of lime deposits. Due to their porous structure, the limestone tuffs are extremely fragile and therefore endangered. It is therefore forbidden to enter, otherwise the naturally formed structure will be destroyed!

A beautifully prepared facility for hikers

The Green Belt runs through the whole of Germany and was the border between West and East Germany at the time of the inner-German division. Now protected as a nature reserve, for almost forty years it was 1,393 kilometers long and part of the Iron Curtain that divided Europe into two blocks.

In this section of the trail, you can always hike sections (recommended on the circular hiking trails P5 and P12) on the column trail and green belt.
