Mecklenburg's thickest beech tree, with a trunk circumference of 8 meters, is dying!

The oak tree stands 800 m northeast of Neu Dobbin, a small district of Dobbin-Linstow. It stands in the middle of a field. The trunk is densely overgrown with undergrowth. This makes it difficult to measure the circumference. The oak tree has an umbrella-shaped crown that is significantly wider than it is tall. At its widest point, the crown has a diameter of 30 m. The monumental trunk is very irregular. Several thickenings can be seen towards the ground. At a height of 3 m, the trunk splits into several branches. The oak tree is in good condition. 1.3 km southeast stands the Shepherd's Beech, which, with a trunk circumference of 8.58 m, is one of the thickest beeches in Europe. The Shepherd's Beech is a red beech in the municipality of Dobbin-Linstow in the Rostock district. With a trunk circumference of over 8 meters and a height of 23 meters, it is one of the largest known beech trees in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This remarkable and special landmark in the field was designated a natural monument in 1987 by a resolution of the Güstrow district council. Source: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sch%C3%A4ferbuche As the beech was attacked by the fungus and can no longer be saved, the former cycle path was relocated to avert dangers for cyclists. This means that the tree can remain standing in peace.

A really impressive tree. But I think many of us are more likely to die like this beech tree.

The Dobbin Shepherd's Beech, a huge beech, is estimated to be 200 years old. Unfortunately, the beech is infected with the smut fungus and will perish from it - too bad!

The Nossentiner/ Schwinzer Heide nature park extends over 365 km² over parts of the districts of Müritz (40%), Parchim (38%) and Güstrow (22%). With only 9 inhabitants/km², it is very sparsely populated. The centerpiece of the nature park is a huge area of sand that is now covered by extensive forests (55%). The forest is currently being converted from pine forests to mixed forests. There are 60 lakes (14%) with different qualities: some are shallow and nutrient-rich, others are deep and clear. Most of it is also used for fishing. Agriculture (25%) is only practiced in the peripheral areas, with grain, maize and rapeseed being grown on the fields and the grassland mostly being used for suckler cow husbandry. The nature park is accessible via a network of cycling, hiking and horseback riding trails. A wide range of information on the origin, use and development of this cultural landscape can be obtained on circular routes and nature trails. The central information point is the culture and information center Karower Meiler. 16 nature reserves cover 19% of the area. The entire nature park is a European bird sanctuary.
