The Herrenteich Pond is located in the heart of the carp town of Reinfeld. It was artificially created in the 12th century by Cistercian monks as a reservoir for the Heilsau River for fish farming. Carp are still bred here today. A four-kilometer circular trail around the Lower Herrenteich invites you to discover this special ecosystem. 16 stations along the adventure trail offer fun and a nature experience in one, sharpening your awareness of the special features of this natural area. The Herrenteich in Reinfeld is a popular tourist destination. The approximately 55-hectare body of water is divided into the upper and lower Herrenteich. The upper Herrenteich remains a recognized nature reserve. The lower Herrenteich is home to, among other things, a hiking trail and an outdoor pool in the summer. Due to melting snow, the Herrenteich flooded in early March 2010. A temporary dam erected at the time due to construction work threatened to no longer hold the water masses. A breach of the dam would have flooded the entire hinterland. The Hamburg/Lübeck railway embankment would also have been affected. An artificially created dam runs along Klosterstrasse, damming the Piepenbek to the house moat or school pond. There is an avenue of old linden trees and a gnarled oak tree, which is protected as a natural monument. Under these trees on the east side, the former school path runs towards the “Old School”, which shimmers through the foliage north of the pond and was used as a primary school until 1972. Therefore, the house moat is just called “school pond” by the older Reinfelders. Before the school was built in 1839, a Renaissance castle of the Plöner Dukes stood there between 1604 and 1775. At that time, the pond surrounded the stately house in a ring, and this is how the pond got the name “Hausgraben”.

The Hevenbruch has been a nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein since April 2003. It covers 173 hectares, is almost entirely forested (97%), and is embedded in the "Stormarn Terminal Moraine Area" of the East Holstein hill country. The purpose of the reserve is to permanently preserve the natural environment in this area in its entirety. In particular, the undisturbed natural development of geological and biological processes in the forests is to be allowed to continue, also for documentation purposes in natural sciences and forestry. No forestry interventions whatsoever take place on the entire forest area of the Hevenbruch!
