Geological highlight after a downhill section from Sauberg / Kerstlingsrd. Field. Fossil seabed from the Muschelkalkzeit. Especially when it comes to trips with children / adolescents, it is now an even more worthwhile destination thanks to the new information boards.

I hope you ignore this suggestion and do not destroy this natural monument by entering or driving on it. Both are prohibited for a reason.

A look back into the history of the earth 240 million years ago: THAT'S what the ocean floor looked like back then. Today we look at the fossilized version that has been preserved in wave form. And entering (and even worse, riding a bike!) Is forbidden, because otherwise this natural monument will be destroyed.

The Mackenröder Trail is a fine single trail that meanders above the Mackenröder cliffs and sometimes leads very close to the edge of the cliff. You should drive carefully in these places in greasy, dirty weather. Overall, however, the trail is great to ride. There is only one very steep section that is a bit challenging. Tip for "biobikers": You should drive the trail north. It's more fun there, because it's mostly downhill and only has to be pedaled briefly uphill in a few places.

The Kerstlingeröder field is home to an enormous biodiversity. Since a large open area was used for a long time for military purposes, but not for agriculture, many of the original plant communities have been preserved. In addition to numerous rare plants, over 50 species of birds and more than 400 species of butterflies have been identified here. It's worth just lingering and watching.

Both from this point of view and from the other side (which is mostly overgrown) you can reach the Leine rapids/white water near Göttingen. Anyone coming from Göttingen on the Leine-Heide cycle path (which normally leads over a bridge about 1 km beforehand) could also continue straight on here at the bridge, follow the path and enjoy this view again. Above all, you wouldn't have to push or partially carry the bike over the bridge. If you follow the path straight ahead, after the curve you will come straight back to the LHR, which you can then continue without any problems.

4월 16, 2021, White Fallow Deer Enclosure, Kehr (Göttingen)
This enclosure offers opportunities to observe the diurnal fallow deer. At different times of the year it offers changing sights. The antlers are shed in late April to early May. A short time later, new horns develop under a fur-like skin - the bast. Another 3 months later the bast is swept off, it first hangs in shreds from the antlers, where the bare bones then come to light.

The rut in October is acoustically impressive. Especially at night the rutting screams, a long drawn out dull belch, can be heard from far away.

Here is an abandoned Lower Muschelkalk quarry. In addition to the yellowish dolomitic limestones of the limestone bank, a section of the approx. 240 million year old seabed has been exposed and preserved. The regular wave pattern is a pleasure to look at. It indicates the subaquatic formation from lime sludge. Embedded in the surface are isolated inconspicuous petrefacts, e.g. sea line style members (witch's pennies), which can also be found in various places around the area in the forest floor (e.g. v. Encrinus liliiformis in the trochitic limestone). An information board clearly gives more precise explanations.

It's geologically very interesting here. The terrain is in motion. Over the years, material breaks off the steep face here and there, so that fortunately it shifts very slowly towards the west. Under the layer of lime is the red, that is the layer of the upper red sandstone. Red becomes slightly mushy with moisture. The weight of the limestone layer results in redness (earth glaciers), which can be guessed below the steep edge. The path along the cliffs is just fun. It is interspersed with roots and small slopes. There is still a safety distance to the edge of the steep face. I once received a cross-sectional sketch of the geological situation from Professor Dieter Meischner (†) privately. This is inserted under photos.
