The wetland habitat contains many forests and fish ponds. Over decades, the post-mining landscape has been shaped and enhanced. However, unlike during the GDR era, this was not done by reforesting with pure stands of pine, but rather through a variety of attractions.

The nearly 3,000-year-old ramparts of Ostro are enthroned on a spur above the Klosterwasser valley. It is undoubtedly the most imposing archaeological monument in Upper Lusatia. In the 7th century B.C. The settlement was first fortified by the Billendorfer group, the people of the final phase of the Lusatian culture. The enormous amount of material and effort that was used to build the wall testifies to the high level of organization in early society and is astounding. Many mysteries entwine around the impressive testimony. A look into the past that is worthwhile.

The nearly 3,000-year-old ramparts of Ostro are enthroned on a spur above the Klosterwasser valley. It is undoubtedly the most imposing archaeological monument in Upper Lusatia. In the 7th century B.C. The settlement was fortified for the first time by the Billendorfer group, the people of the final phase of the Lusatian culture, with an enormous expenditure of material and strength. About 2000 years later, the spur was visited again and fortified during the Slavic settlement period. A mighty sectional wall with a ditch in front of it has since divided the spur into an upper and a lower castle. From the 12th century, a hilltop castle was built on the eastern wall as part of the German settlement in the East.

If you have an eye ailment, you should wet your eyes with the medicinal water from the Marian spring. In addition, the pure water of the Marienquelle is said to be good for women who have not yet fulfilled their desire to have children. It is said that if they drink from the spring water in the pilgrimage site of Rosenthal, they will soon "bear fruit". Incidentally, you cannot miss the access to the Marienquelle in Rosenthal in Upper Lusatia. A signpost made of Lusatian granite, which is located directly next to the entrance to the pilgrimage church, points you in the direction of the Marienbrunnen with the wondrous water. At the southern tip of a beautiful floodplain meadow - located between Elstra and Rauschwitz - directly on the Black Elster - there is a legendary place - the Teufelsstein. A place that has unfortunately fallen somewhat into oblivion as a destination for excursions in recent decades, it is a symbol of one of the most beautiful legends handed down orally in our Elstra homeland. Just look at the footprint-like indentations in the granite rock - let your imagination run wild. Once upon a time, when there were dwarves, there were quite a few in this area. When the plague broke out in Elstra, people were amazed that the dwarves were spared. One fine day a farmer was working there in the meadow and was talking about it with a dwarf. But he said that this was a secret and he shouldn't reveal it. Days later, the farmer would bring brandy out to the stone and pour it into a stone hole before beginning to work in the meadow. The dwarf, curious, licked it with his finger over and over until he was drunk. Again the farmer asked for the secret - and this time the dwarf revealed it. "With boar's root and burnet, the touch of the plague goes away very quickly." As soon as it was out, the farmer drove home as quickly as possible and healed the people. "Thus the country was freed from the black death by peasant cleverness." The devil, however, was so angry that he kicked his legs in anger and banished the dwarves. Since then, no dwarf has been seen in this area. An imprint in the rock (photo above) is evidence of the angry kick of the devil. If you still have doubts about the authenticity of this impression, you should relax and enjoy the beautiful nature along the Black Elster. Coming from Elstra, turn right from the Weißen Mauer via the Leipsbergweg, cross the Kesselwasser, keep right at the fork through a cave in the direction of the Grüner Tilge. Follow the path for about 500 m over an old railroad crossing and turn left along a romantic path lined with old trees in the direction of the Black Elster. Just cross the wooden bridge. Then the Teufelsstein (photo below) lies at the feet of the hiker. Source: https://www.mein-elstra.de/

Belongs to the sun shrines of Upper Lusatia. At sunrise on the summer solstice, the sun shines through an opening in the stone. Project Hand of the Gods In the times when Christianity and paganism were still fighting each other for dominance in Lusatia, a pagan sorcerer lived in the place, who persecuted the Christians most bitterly. Any means of doing so was fine with him. – Late on a stormy, rainy night, a hiker knocked on his hut and asked for a lodging for the night with the greeting: “Praise be to Jesus Christ”. But the magician cried out: "Cursed be Jesus Christ!" and wanted to drive the stranger away with a stick. But he said: "You shall be a sign of how God punishes sinners!" and touched him with his staff. Then the hut disappeared along with the magician, and in its place stood that frog-like stone structure. (After Haupt, Book of Legends of Lusatia.)
