The approximately nine-hectare protected forest serves to preserve and promote the near-natural development of a naturally occurring beech forest in its diverse forms, maintaining its unique beauty and strengthening the ecosystem's capacity to function. It is being studied long-term without direct human intervention to understand forest structure, soil, flora, and fauna, and is also used as a demonstration area for silviculture and forestry education. As part of the Natura 2000 site "Ruppiner Schweiz," it protects, in particular, the woodruff-beech forest as a habitat type of European importance, thus safeguarding genetic resources and the biodiversity of self-regulating forest communities.

Anyone hiking along the Rhin Lakes should definitely take a detour around the Kellenseen. An almost mystical, beautiful place! The two bodies of water are connected by a belt of reeds and fields of water lilies. Nestled in a large mixed beech forest area, they offer wonderful peace and quiet, not least to anglers. The water is rather cloudy, which is attributed to the extensive carp populations.

Source of the Kunsterbach; Namesake of the small town “Kunsterspring”. The spring is called the boiling spring because of the bubbling water that comes out of it.
