The most beautiful part of the route

If the weather is fine, do not drive after 11:00 a.m. on Sundays. Extremely heavy car and motorcycle traffic. In the switchbacks, especially the first one, you can hardly breathe from the exhaust fumes.

Good food, promising paths and little altitude speak for the Escheck pass between Basler and Schützenbachtal. However, it can get crowded here. Top destinations that can be easily reached from here are: Stöcklewaldkopf (1067m; hiking home and observation tower with a view of the Alps) Martinskapelle / Brend: Source of the Danube, extensive, attractive hiking area and enjoy one of the most beautiful views in the Black Forest from the Brend Tower, several places to stop for refreshments with good food

Unfortunately, there is a lot of traffic, otherwise a really great climb

Driving in the dark is not recommended. Even with proper lighting, it's too dangerous. Speeding, blinding cars, and the constant fear that a deer is about to jump into the road. I wouldn't do it again...

Has a flair of the alpine pass road, at least in some passages.

The Spirzen climb is easy and smooth, with a maximum gradient of just under 12% at the end of the valley. The route is in excellent condition (January 2021), which also makes the descent very enjoyable. Be careful, though, as drivers often drive fast here, which can sometimes be a bit of a squeeze on the narrower sections. Traffic can be a nuisance in summer, especially uphill. We recommend the alternative route https://www.komoot.de/highlight/96429, which also leads to Thurner Pass with almost no traffic, albeit on a slightly steeper route.
