The extensive pond landscape in Riddagshausen is the result of the work of the Cistercian monks, who drained the then very swampy area and created fish ponds. Of the original 28 ponds, 11 still exist today, of which the Mittelteich and Kreuzteich (between which the excellent path marked here runs) are among the largest. The ponds are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. With a size of twelve hectares, the Kreuzteich is the second largest pond in the Riddgagshäuser nature reserve after the Scharpenbruchteich. It is the habitat of numerous waterfowl, amphibians and insects. The fish pond is part of the pond system that was laid out 900 years ago around the Riddagshausen monastery. The Kreuzteich is probably Braunschweig's most popular ice skating surface when it's frozen over.
