Folk medicine attributes positive effects to the plant on digestion, the respiratory tract, liver, gallbladder, intestines, and stomach—it can relieve flatulence, cramping stomach pain, and weakness. The wild garlic season begins (with regional variations) around mid-March. This is when the succulent, garlic-scented leaves sprout from the ground. The season ends with the wild garlic's flowering period, around the beginning of May.

Wild garlic is a plant species in the Allium genus and is thus related to chives, onions, and garlic. This common, early-sprouting plant, which is widespread in Europe and parts of Asia, especially in forests, is a prized wild vegetable and widely collected.
