The Martin Chapel marks a place steeped in history, which, interestingly, was only archaeologically investigated for the first time in the 1950s. Before that, in the 19th century, it was part of the Kolmenhof, where it was converted into a utility building (and significantly rebuilt). Conscious of its historical significance, remnants from this period were dismantled and the building was extensively restored.

It is a popular area for climbers and has numerous routes of most difficulty levels. The rock quality is excellent. The routes are mostly well secured. The return to the entrances is done by abseiling 2 x 20 m or 1 x 30 m. Please abseil considerately in "oncoming traffic". The large Kandel rock can be reached via the Kandel summit. There are sufficient parking spaces. There is also a bus from St. Peter to the Kandel. From the summit it is about a 20-minute walk, please wear good shoes, via the Damenweg (blue diamond) to the climbing area.

The Martinskapelle is located on an old pass road between the Breg and Elz springs, at the height of the Danube-Rhine watershed. The origin of the chapel goes back to the pre-Carolinic period. Findings from excavations allow the assumption that a sacred building stood here as early as 800. Perhaps the road from Furtwangen to the top of the pass was already an old La Tène road and there were connections between Celtic and early Christian culture here.

Mystical in the rain, when the haze climbs up along the narrow spruce trunks and the stones appear, you feel as if you have been transported to a fairytale world. You can't help but be amazed. Nice place.

An unexpected alpine highlight that should not be missed on the way to or from the Kandel. For experienced climbers, the crags can be climbed without equipment, the climber takes the steep wall on the valley side.
