Sheep farming was once important for Virneburg. Today only the name Schafberg reminds of it. In 1912, however, the place has 275 sheep, with 235 inhabitants. A shepherd chosen by the community is responsible for the animals. For this he receives 360 marks and for every 7 sheep, a hundredweight of potatoes and a Malter of rye. In the evening he gets supper and food for the dog from one of the sheep owners. If he stays in the field at night, the food has to be brought there.
