From the campsite north of the lake and along the eastern shore, there's a forest path around the lake. The path is unpaved and, in places, very dusty. This path is shared with pedestrians, so it can be busy on nice weekends, so please be considerate of others.

Scientifically speaking, the Laacher See is neither a maar nor a real crater lake, but a water-filled caldera - a crater that was created by a collapse after the magma chamber below the volcanic cone was emptied. Small bubbles rise in the water - these so-called mofettes are rising carbon dioxide and illustrate the volcanic history of the lake🌋.

Laach Castle, also known as the Palatine Castle, is a Salian castle on the Laach Lake opposite the Maria Laach Abbey in the Ahrweiler district. It was located on a rocky spur above the eastern shore of the lake and was temporarily the seat of the Rhenish Counts Palatine. Count Palatine Heinrich von Laach from the House of Luxembourg-Gleiberg (†1095) founded the Laach Monastery in 1093. Laach Castle was demolished around 20 years after the monastery was founded by the Count Palatine's stepson and adopted son, Siegfried von Ballenstedt. The loss of the castle was not a great loss for Siegfried, as he had another castle in the area, Rheineck Castle. Today, only a few traces and the field names "Laacher Burg" and "Alte Burg" indicate its existence. The castle was protected from the land side by two section moats, behind which there were stone towers. The remaining buildings were probably made of wood.
