The heathland in the area of the Bullensee is not particularly large, but it is beautiful to look at. The open spaces are densely covered with heather and a beautiful sandy path leads through. However, it tends to get a bit crowded here.

I headed for the Vareler Heide on a tour between Hamburg and Bremen in order to avoid the main road as much as possible. I was very positively surprised. There is a lot of heather here, sheep or goats graze here and you can also see historic stables. The path through the heath is a lot of fun to drive because it is narrow and technically feasible. A highlight is the beautifully designed recreation area with a work of art. Here you have a great view over the heath. Conclusion: a must see.

Charming heath area, but then a bit small. As a destination then only something for the curious or nature junkies who always need new destinations, otherwise more sensible as part of a longer route. Or as a local recreation area for residents.

Great way through the Vareler Heide, which is just so diverse. Here heathland, forest and flowing water alternate with a pleasant climate.
