The tree is still in the place where it belongs. In a beautiful beech forest. With small wooden benches all around. Beautiful, quiet hiking trails.

The Scottish Highlanders are a peaceful breed of cattle. Everything is very slow and they don't fixate on them with their eyes. Then they get very curious. I also really liked the view of the birch forest. It may be that I'm spoiled at the moment. So I have to "earn" a hike's stars. The water areas are visited by anglers, and they drive right up to them in their cars. There are also too many tractors driving too fast on the supply routes.

Today, the landscape is characterized by a mosaic of water areas used for sport fishing, between agricultural grassland areas. The area, which is crossed by a network of paths, also includes reed beds and fen-like wet meadows.

After the Second World War, peat was mined here on a large scale to a depth of six metres. This is how the peat pits, which are today's water surfaces, were created.

As the North Sea rose after the last ice age, the groundwater level began to rise, which led to the formation of peatlands, which was accelerated by the region's basin-like valley location. A huge raised bog was created.

The wooded geest area (Dithmarscher Schweiz) is 72 m above sea level on the Rugebarg. NN the highest point in the community. The well-known “Heidberg” is 46 m above sea level. NN is significantly lower, but is considered a popular destination in the district forest among hikers. The Geest around Welmbüttel is a watershed. The Tielenau rises in the southwestern part of the district forest and flows into the Eider via Tellingstedt. The surface water on the western side of the Geest collects in small streams until it flows into the Miele. The Broklandsau in the north has several springs in town. The Osterau rises in the district forest near the old, now dry ponds, the Wierbek has several springs, one rises on the Bahnhofsberg and feeds several ponds, including on the B 203, before it joins other source streams in Norderwohld. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welmb%C3%BCttel

Quiet, sometimes impassable hiking trails even with ascents and descents, the Dithmarscher Schweiz😁

The hilly eroded landscape with its hillside gorges and the Broklands and Tielenau springs, which is very turbulent by Dithmar standards, got its current appearance in the Ice Age. Erosion created a system of valley cuts that widened to such an extent that only remnants of the old plateau remained as so-called "witness mountains", the highest being the Heidberg. Where a mixed forest with mostly conifers characterizes the landscape now, things looked different 150 to 200 years ago. With the exception of small strips of deciduous forest on the steep slopes in the west and south, heathland was widespread here, as it was everywhere on the poorer soils of the Geest. They were created through forms of cultivation by humans. Clearing of the primeval deciduous forest, forest grazing, leaf hay production and sod cutting had given rise to huge heath areas around Welmbüttel, Schrum, Immenstedt and elsewhere on the Dithmarscher Geest. Sods are sods that have been cut off, mostly from heather vegetation, which used to be used, for example, as bedding in stables or as building material. Around 1900, systematic reforestation of the heaths began here, mostly with spruce, interspersed with smaller stands of larch and pine. However, a dwindling remnant of heather was able to hold on to the Welmbüttel Heidberg. Some plant and animal species that depend on drought, warmth and a lack of nutrients can still survive here. In addition to heather, these are sheep's fescue, curled hairgrass and bedstraw. Among the animal species, insects are particularly noteworthy, such as tiger beetles, various wild bee, wasp and spider species.
