The “heathland near Kellinghusen” belongs to the Holsteinische Vorgeest natural area and is part of a larger inland dune area that was formed on old moraines on the edge of the Stör lowlands after the last Ice Age and stretched from Kellinghusen to Brokstedt. An educational trail leads around the site. The nature reserve is looked after by the Steinburg district as the lower nature conservation authority. The area is one of the last remnants of the formerly large heathland areas on the Holstein Geest, along with other small remaining areas in the area. In 1913, the leather manufacturer C. Westphal donated the necessary money to the town of Kellinghusen to purchase the area on the condition that the heather be preserved “in its present form”.
