Those who love altitude will enjoy the 278 steps to the Deusenberg slag heap. A sporting challenge with guaranteed rewards. At the top, an impressive panoramic view of Dortmund, all the way to Signal Iduna Park and the TV tower, awaits. The former landfill has been transformed into a green oasis with a mountain bike arena, walking trails, and a paragliding launch site.

The relatively moderate climb to the plateau of the Deusenberg spoil heap is worthwhile. A magnificent view is the reward.

The climb is short, the reward is the view of Dortmund 😍

The Ruhr Regional Association has done a great job. This means you can walk around the entire Hoheward slag heap at the bottom and no longer have to go through the busy industrial area. Of course, only pedestrians and cyclists are allowed, no cars are allowed. There is a great playground in the middle. There are information boards along the entire 1.5km stretch.

I can only recommend the dumps, and you should also explore the mine site.

The Deusenberg dump in Dortmund is a fascinating example of the transformation of former industrial and waste landfill areas into valuable leisure and recreation areas. Originally used as a landfill, the Deusenberg was opened to the public after extensive renovation work, including sealing and reforestation with around 150,000 trees. Today the Deusenberg is a popular destination not only because of its impressive view over the Ruhr area, but also as the location of the EDG Mountain Bike Arena, which is aimed at hobby riders of all ages. The summit of the heap, which is around 120 meters above sea level and around 55 meters above the surrounding landscape, can be reached via a 137 meter long staircase or ramp. The dump offers a wide view over Dortmund and the city's important landmarks. The special sights include the St. Reinoldi Church, the RWE Tower, the Dortmunder U, the Westfalenstadion and the television tower in Westfalenpark. The Mountain Bike Arena on the Deusenberg was set up by Disposal Dortmund GmbH (EDG) and offers various trails and a special obstacle course for mountain bikers. Despite the focus on beginners and children, the area offers sufficient opportunities for a variety of driving techniques and is freely accessible. The photovoltaic system on the Deusenberg is another highlight. It is one of the largest systems in the Ruhr area and, with its approximately 13,000 modules, covers the electricity needs of around 1,000 households. This sustainable energy production underlines the ecological value of the area. Although the Deusenberg originally served as a garbage dump, it has developed into an attractive place for leisure activities and sports. The Deusenberg dump is an example of how industrially used areas can be converted into valuable recreational areas that are of interest to both the local population and visitors.

A combination of industrial area, industrial culture and the dark side of globalization. Truckers, mainly from Eastern Europe, have been standing on the site for years, camping in their trucks and waiting for the next load, which can sometimes be seriously delayed...

As part of the Green Infrastructure funding program, the Münster district government has made EU funding available for the AktivLinearPark project in the Hoheward Landscape Park. The project budget was around 4.4 million euros. Based on the Emscherland 2020 Integrated Action Plan, the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) developed the AktivLinearPark together with the cities of Herten and Recklinghausen projects for the Hoheward Landscape Park. The AktivLinearPark was officially opened on October 30, 2022. https://www.rvr.ruhr/themen/tourismus-freizeit/aktivlinearpark/
