A fen developed in an Ice Age gully south of the Long Lake, which later became a wooded wetland. The Krumme Lake forms a diversely structured wetland complex in the middle of the otherwise dry Grünau Forest, which is lined with pine trees. It is characterized by alder swamp forests, sedge meadows, reedbeds and groundwater-influenced birch and English oak forests.
