Beautiful park with a total of 10 ponds

This place is not a conventional building, but a memorial ensemble consisting of twelve stone stelae. The project was initiated as part of urban renewal and symbolizes European understanding and the growing together of the continent. Each stele symbolically represents different aspects or nations, and their arrangement in the public space of Grumme invites visitors to linger and reflect.

In total, there are 10 ponds in Grumbecke Valley. There are also many places to take a short break or to have something to eat in the Goeke beer garden.

You have to look closely not to miss the stone. A parked car is enough.

Sign from the city of Bochum: The Blumenkamp is a body of water typical for the region: many of the tunnels of the Hannover mine collapsed below us one after the other. Slowly but steadily the earth sank, a total of over ten meters, down to the groundwater level. A subsidence lake was created. Subsidence may be a problem for us humans, but it can be a stroke of luck for animals and plants. An amphibious alder-willow swamp forest is developing in the lake: the trees have roots in the water. Duckweed floats on the surface, and cattails grow in the edge area. Mallards, Egyptian and Canada geese, and also coots and moorhens can be observed here. If you're lucky, you'll see a little grebe or kingfisher. The marsh warbler is unmistakable. Amphibians living here include common toads, grass frogs and green frogs. Sometimes you can hear the "bell sounds" of the midwife toad. There are also alpine and smooth newts. And unfortunately also turtles that were illegally released. Almost all nutrient-rich mountain subsidence waters have to live with one problem: they have no inflow or outflow, heat up considerably in midsummer and then suffer from a lack of oxygen. The pond can even dry out at times. Sometimes, in an emergency, fresh water is added to save the amphibians. The water usually recovers quickly.
