We rode this section as part of our 2023 Rhine Cycle Tour. Despite extreme flooding, a beautiful path along the "Father Rhine". Definitely worth it 👍

Coming from the German side, you should definitely go through the old town (despite the cobblestones). A detour over the Rhine bridge to the Swiss side is also recommended. You can easily drive along the Rhine.

The climb is worth it, the path is a bit exposed. But you can see the valley and feel the remains of the original Jura

Since 1803, Laufenburg has been divided into a German and Swiss part, with the Rhine as the border river, due to Napoleon's 'Mediation Act', which abolished the canton of Fricktal. The German part of the city received a rail connection to the station as early as 1856, the Swiss part only in 1892. In 1914, the characteristic course of the Rhine with rapids at the then wooden bridge from 1810 ('Laufenbrücke') came to an abrupt end due to the construction of a hydroelectric power station a little further away. The new bridge from 1911 was extensively renovated in 1982 and in the middle, right on the border, the statue of the Bohemian priest/martyr John Nepomucenus (1350-1393) was replaced. In 2004, a new motorway bridge was constructed east of Laufenburg to relieve the burden on the historic old bridge in the center of the town. On January 1, 2010, the then independent municipalities of Sulz (AG) were merged with Laufenburg.

Anyone who likes to ride a gravel bike will love this section from Wallbach to Säckingen (or vice versa). Rolls well.
