The Black Tower is Brugg's proud landmark—imposing, mysterious, and steeped in history. Built in the 12th century to protect the Aare Bridge, it later even served as a prison. With its thick walls, its bay window overlooking the river, and the Roman stones in its foundation, it speaks of power, change, and centuries of city history—a silent sentinel at the entrance to the old town.

Right next to the stone bridge stands the imposing Black Tower, the oldest building and landmark of the city, first mentioned in documents in 1238. The stones of the lower gate area come from the legionary camp of Vindonissa and are therefore even several hundred years older.

It's picturesquely situated and worth a visit, but a good level of fitness is required. Unfortunately, the upper access is currently closed due to a landslide (a fir tree fell and swept away the access steps directly in front of the ruins). Therefore, you have to take the longer route over the bridge further down.

Habsburg Castle is the cradle of the Habsburg dynasty. This is where it all began. Today, the castle is home to a great restaurant that takes up most of the castle's rooms. The complex is therefore open all year round and can be visited free of charge. However, you won't find an extensive museum or dozens of rooms here. Only the palace (tower) and the outdoor area, including the outer castle ruins, can be visited. A small shop at the sod fountain offers the opportunity to buy souvenirs, books and the like. You can even rent VR glasses that show the viewer virtually what the Habsburg once looked like. The view from up here is breathtaking, by the way. Autumn in particular has its colorful advantages. The castle can also be easily reached by car. There is a sufficiently large parking lot. Anyone who is out and about as a hiker or biker will get their money's worth in terms of the route.
