The Owl stands at 3,670 feet, just west of Mt. Katahdin. It is often overlooked due to its proximity to the famous mountain, but it shouldn't be! It is a fantastic, challenging, somewhat scramble-y day hike with truly amazing views of Katahdin and the surrounding area from the summit. At, and leading up to, the summit, there are unique rock formations that are fun to explore too.

There is good parking at the Gulf Hagas Lower Trailhead, which has two bathrooms and access to both the AT and Rim Trail. The Hermitage is a preserve containing 150-year old white pines along the river, and is one of few such undisturbed areas in the Northeast.

Just east of the summit of Third Mountain is Monument Ledge, which offers sweeping vistas north across Long Pond and the Appalachian Mountain Club 100 Mile Wilderness Conservation Area.

Here at the bend in the river you get a great view of one of the many prominent waterfalls along the Pleasant River.

Hamlin Peak is a northern spur of Mount Katahdin and yields dramatic views across Great Basin to the Knife's Edge ridge, Pamola Peak, and the Katahdin Peaks. You also get a nice view into North Basin, and Howe Peaks are just a quick flat jaunt along the ridge to the north.

There are a series of falls for you to explore leading up the Howe Brook Trail. The trail is steep but nontechnical, and the pools and falls are a great reward for your efforts.
