One of the most impressive pieces of earth.

Warning! Update 2025: Do not hike this trail! The descent from Piskerra no longer exists. The ascent to Piskerra is also not easy and not for beginners. The same applies to the broken steps. It took me three hours to complete the entire hike, twice as long as planned, and at times I was in mortal danger. No joke.

The Bardenas Reales Natural Park is a stunning semi-desert landscape located in Navarre, northern Spain. This park, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, covers approximately 42,500 hectares and is characterized by its unique geological formations and biodiversity. In addition to its natural beauty, the park is home to a wealth of wildlife, including eagles, vultures, foxes, and reptiles. It is an ideal place for hiking and cycling, with an extensive network of trails and paths.

Beautiful walk in an absurd landscape. But certainly not easy or safe. Many paths are eroded (and impossible to find), and the stairs to the lookout point have completely collapsed. In wet weather it becomes super slippery. Climb at your own risk.

The Castilla de Tierra, the castle of earth, the brightly colored mountain of sand with a few stones on top is the iconic centerpiece of this impressive park.

You can explore the Bardenas on foot, by bike, by Segway, on horseback, or by 4x4 or your own car. There are many well-signposted routes. Of course, the inner part is closed to cars and the experience is much more beautiful by bike.

According to scientists, this was an immense inland sea millions of years ago. Fossils of crocodiles and sea turtles are the evidence.

A nice, very slightly undulating wide gravel road in a breathtaking landscape.

A touch of the Wild West so close to France. Clearly the nicest way to discover the place because otherwise it's 34km of track to do by car and it's a bit like Las Vegas. In September, there are few people, the track is wide and it's not a problem to share with cars: in any case it's 40km/h for them!

June 2024 Attention! This exceptional hike has been prohibited to the public for around fifteen years according to the Bardenas information center

Very rolling with varied landscapes perfect for mountain biking or gravel. Be careful, the military sometimes (often) block parts of the park for exercises. Lots of French tourists but as soon as you move away from the car parks there are a lot less people. In case of rain, the ground quickly becomes very sticky (clay) and unsuitable for cycling.

Earthen castle symbolic of the Bardenas. Seen in April when it is relatively uncrowded at that time. Too bad it's overrun by a huge flow of tourists arriving by bus or car coming to take selfies in front. Situation clearly highlighted precisely by the photographer Natacha de Mahieu. https://www.instagram.com/p/ChC-C-xDk27/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Travel only in dry weather. Stormy rain and sticky mud will block your bike and prevent you from moving forward. If it's raining or wet, don't go; if you do go, always ride on gravel. On dirt, only when it's completely dry.
