Before climbing the Lägerngrat, it's worth taking a break at the Schartenfels Castle Restaurant 🍽️🏰. With its sunny terrace and magnificent views over the Limmat Valley, it's the perfect place to refuel with a coffee or light lunch—in style and with a view—before heading up the narrow ridge path.

The climb to the castle ruins is very narrow and very steep and so is the descent, but for my effort I once again satisfied my curiosity 🤣😂 and found that the ruins are still there

The other option is to hike in the direction of the Belvédère restaurant, and about 200m in front of the restaurant (walking from the city of Baden) you also have the option of reaching the ruins. A beautiful view over the old town of Baden and the whole area rewards our efforts several times.

The Schloss Schartenfels restaurant is not a historic building. It was built in 1881 by Gottfried Anner from Baden on the Lägernfels as a vineyard cottage with a tower. Just one year later, he was granted permission to open a summer restaurant. In 1894 it was expanded into a castle-like complex. At a cost of CHF 45,000.00, Anner's property increased to 3 hectares, consisting of forest and rock, the castle park and the wine-growing region. The local community has leased the restaurant to Denise and Gian Riederer with the stipulation that the business should not only be run for high-end needs, but also offer hikers the opportunity to eat in the cozy garden or in the restaurant.
