2월 12, 2026, Maiden Castle Hillfort
Dominating the Dorset landscape, Maiden Castle is one of Europe’s largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts. Its massive, labyrinthine earthworks were engineered around 400 BC to protect a thriving community of hundreds. The site is famous for its "war cemetery," detailing a fierce struggle against the Roman Second Legion in 43 AD. Today, its sweeping ramparts remain a masterclass in ancient defensive architecture.

Not easy to get to, but a great burial mound! We only found the easier access on the way back.

The view of giant is best from the opposite hill. When I took my photo the chalk was very dull so viewing wasn’t brilliant but I know they restore him every now and again so he should be bright again. The climb up past the giant is very steep so if hiking poles would be a great addition and grippy footwear 👟

Hell Stone The Hell Stone long barrow was constructed around the same time as Grey Mare and her Colts. However, antiquarians in 1866 decided to reconstruct the stone chamber at the front of the long earthen mound, setting these huge stones upright with a cap on top. Although tucked away between the Hardy Monument and Abbotsbury, you can follow the route marked on our Field Guide series for the route. Long barrows are associated with the Neolithic period (6000-4500 years ago) and the South Dorset Ridgeway boasts at least 10 of them! These long earth and stone mounds would have contained a burial chamber for several burials. Three unusually long mounds also exist from this early period, known as ‘bank barrows’. These don’t appear to be to be associated with burial and may have defined the boundaries of land ownership. Discovering the South Dorset Ridgeway Hidden in the hills between Dorchester and Weymouth lies a remarkable landscape just waiting to be discovered. This is the South Dorset Ridgeway, not just an ancient trackway but a ridge of high land that has attracted people for thousands of years – a special place to celebrate life and bury their dead. Experts tell us that this ridge of land is as important as Stonehenge and Avebury for the scale of monuments and what they tell us of life in the past. But without a stone henge, this vast ceremonial landscape remains one of the UKs best kept secrets! You don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy this ‘land of bone and stone’ – it’s an intriguing mix of wildlife, geology and history all wrapped up in modern day life. The South Dorset Ridgeway Guide will show you that the South Dorset Ridgeway is a great place not just to celebrate life but to live it too. Whether you’re interested getting out and about with the kids, letting off steam, going for a hike, spotting wildlife or simply enjoying a stunning view … you’ll find plenty to do here.

This provides a perfect viewpoint from which to observe the large hill figure of the Cerne Giant. It's at just the right distance, not too far, to see the figure in its entirety.

A giant naked figure cut into the chalk hillside above Cerne Abbas village. It was probably constructed in the late Saxon period and is the tallest hill figure in the UK. It's now managed and maintained by the National Trust.

The Hardy Monument is 22m high and was completed in 1844 to recognise the achievements of Sir Thomas Hardy, Flag Captain for lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar. It's now managed by the National Trust. Amazing views from here over Weymouth, Portland and along the coast as well as inland.

The reassuringly-named Hell Stone is a Neolithic long barrow, one of several such burial chambers on the Dorset downs. This one lies in a field to the south west of Hardy's Monument above the village of Portesham. While it remains impressive, its current arrangement isn't original and instead the stones were rearranged in 1866 after the capstone fell off. High up above Lyme Bay and Chesil Beach, the dolmen has a spectacular location. It's not on a public footpath but there is a trail to it from the footpath to the north. Stay close to the field's boundary line and return the same way.

Maiden Castle is a stunning hillfort with huge ramparts. It affords breathtaking views over the Dorset. Built during the 1st century BC, it is one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe. Roughly the size of 50 football pitches, the fort would have protected hundreds of residents in its heyday. The site is in the care of English Heritage and is free to enter during reasonable daylight hours.

Peru has the Nazca Lines and England has the Cerne Abbas Giant, a naked man on a hillside wielding a club. One of Dorset's most iconic features, this extraordinary hill carving is around 1,000 years old and has mystified historians and passers by ever since. The origins and exact age are unknown, with plenty of theories abounding from the giant representing a deity to him holding power as a fertility symbol. Either way, it's a spectacular site. As the giant lies quite high on the rounded hill, it's not easy to see from the valley and the best viewpoint is this one. From here, you can hike up to the carving via a variety of footpaths.

The climb up to the Hardy Monument from the south is one of those climbs that you initially don't notice, you just slowly start feeling progressively more tired. It doesn't take long before it becomes steeper and more obvious - the climb is well worth the panoramic views of the coastline and surrounding countryside.
