The Elbe-Lübeck Canal dominates the landscape around Kühsen. Since 1900, it has connected the Elbe and Trave rivers, flowing peacefully through fields and meadows. Today, it is primarily used by pleasure boats. A well-developed hiking trail runs directly along the shore, ideal for longer walks—whether toward Lauenburg or Lübeck. The tranquil setting and waterfront views make the canal a popular spot for excursions and outdoor breaks.

Here you can rest a little and enjoy the landscape. But it's better not to turn off after that, because it only leads to the gravel pit and the path doesn't continue from there.

The landscape to the north of the city has changed considerably over the past centuries due to the different uses. The field names "Walkmöllerholz" and "Walkmöllerfeld" for the area that borders the Elbe-Lübeck Canal between Voßbergs and Bundesstraße 207 are reminiscent of the Möllner fulling mill, which stood at the outflow of the Knakendiek until 1834. At that time, large parts of the Pirschbach valley were covered by large ponds that are now silted up. The water was dammed up and used to operate the mill. The fulling mill, which was owned by the Möllner cloth makers for a long time, was first mentioned in the Möllner town register in 1315. The mill was built here, far outside the city gates, because there was a deposit of fuller's earth or fulling clay at this location, a raw material that was needed for fulling cloth. In the 18th century, the economic conditions for the operation of the fulling mill deteriorated, the buildings fell into disrepair more and more. In 1834, the old mill building was sold and demolished. A new city brickworks was built on the same site. The city's own brickyard was originally located at the outflow of the Stecknitz from the Möllner See (hence the name "Ziegelsee" today). Due to the lack of good clay at that location, the brickworks was moved to its current location after the fulling mill was demolished. A house, a kiln and a drying barn were built. After a few decades, the lack of clay also became apparent at this new location. The technical equipment could no longer compete with more modern systems. In 1906, operations ceased. Very close to the brickworks was the upper lock on the Stecknitz canal, which included a pub. With the construction of the Elbe-Trave (Elbe-Lübeck) canal from 1896 to 1900, the upper lock disappeared. The last tenant of the brickworks, Heinrich Tiedemann, had wisely applied for the liquor license that was connected to the lock in 1898. After it was closed in 1906, the brickworks developed into a popular tourist restaurant that many Möllners liked to visit on their Sunday walks. Unfortunately, the restaurant is currently closed. It's a shame, because it was a good place to take a break. Hopefully it will reopen soon. https://www.moelln.de/die-eulenspiegelstadt/geschichte-tradition/fotos-des-monats/artikel/die-stadtziegelei

This old oak is probably the relic of an old Hute forest. With a trunk circumference of 6.19 m, it is probably around 300 years old.
