The war memorial commemorating the men of Royton who died during the First World War stands at the highest point in the park, and was unveiled on 22 October 1921 by the Earl of Derby. Originally the memorial, which is constructed from Portland stone, bore plaques listing the fallen and a bronze statue. The original plaques were stolen in 1969, and replacements were later installed in the grounds of St Paul's, Royton.

Tandle Hill boasts the title of Oldham's oldest country park. This 110 acre parkland consists of beautiful beech woodland and open grassland and shows off some pretty fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This specific location is the highest point in the park, and, on a clear day, affords views across Manchester and all the way over to the Welsh mountains.

Even though I saw the photos of this trig, I did not expect it to be as perfectly placed as it was! There is an easier way to get to this trig point if you follow the main path but there is the steeper route, which is quicker but does require some rambling and sure footedness.

Knowl Hill near Rochdale is a visible landmark that can be seen for several miles around.and, for the people of that town. The sugar-loaf (conical-shaped) hill has a flat summit that is topped by an Ordnance Survey concrete triangulation pillar, and is 419m (1374) feet above sea-level. It is about 1 mile to the east of Edenfield Road (A680) along a couple of good moorland footpaths; and it overlooks the Ashworth Moor reservoir and the haunted Owd Betts public house, while just downslope to the southeast it overlooks the village of Red Lumb, the hamlet of Wolstenholme, Greenbooth Reservoir, and the village of Norden. To the northwest, the hill stands as a sentinel over the area known as Cheesden with its windswept moors and, further along, it is more distant from Facit and Turn Village, while to the west of Knowl Hill there is Wind Hill and the Ashworth Valley beyond.

The Rain Stone inscribed with the poetry of Simon Armitage, is part of the Stanza Stones collaboration between imove, IIkley Literature Festival, Simon Armitage and Pennine Prospects, as part of the wider Stanza Stones Walk. As you approach the quarry from the White House, watch for a small stone arched bridge spanning the catch water drain on your right about 75 yards before the crags. The path from the bridge affords a close up view of the face carrying the carving. There are six "Stanza Poems" all carved on rock, and all bearing poetry written by Yorkshire poet, Simon Armitage, and chiselled by artist, Pip Hall and her apprentice, Wayne Hart. The six ‘Stanza Stones’ poems celebrate water in all its forms: snow, rain, mist, dew, puddle and beck and were commissioned in 2010 by the Ilkley Literature Festival in the run up to the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Blackstone Edge is a gritstone escarpment at 1,549 feet (472 m) above sea level in the Pennine Hills surrounded by rough moorland on the boarder of Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire. On a good weather day, Manchester City centre along with its ever increasing tower blocks can be seen. If you know where to look, you can also see Knowle Hill, Rivington Pike, Pendle Hill and Stoodley Pike. During the English Civil War 800 men were sent to fortify Blackstone Edge by parliamentarians and was successfully held against an attack by Royalist Cavalry. The long distance Pennine Way trail passes through Blackstone Edge. Robin Hoods Bed is a feature of the area and while the name is sometimes applied to the entire ridge, it is essentially a rock which "overlooks the very edge of the ridge, detached from the main section, with a large and very curious nature-worn ‘bed’.

Archaeology & History Aiggin Stone and cairn This ancient boundary stone has long been an etymological oddity. It is not a prehistoric stone by any means, though its nature has never truly been decided for sure. Some have posited it as Roman in origin, others that it’s merely a waymarker, others that it’s a milestone, and the more common notion is that it’s a boundary marker of the counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire (it’s position in the landscape presently sits it in Lancashire). It is more than likely the stone is late-medieval in nature… Standing by the old Roman road a short distance from the very top of these high Pennine hills on the Yorkshire-Lancashire border, a faint old Latin cross, plus the letters “I.T.” are etched onto its sides. In the 1930s the stone was found laid in the moorland heather, but was thankfully resurrected in 1933. Since then however, it’s been knocked over a couple more times, but presently stands upright. “The name ‘Aiggin’ suggests a pronunciat
