1월 2, 2026, Mørkgonga Gorge Climbing Route
It's better to go uphill than downhill through the gorge.

After descending the ropes through the gorge, there's a steep section with lots of loose rocks. I wouldn't classify this as average, but rather as difficult (and quite dangerous). The rest of the route is very scenic.

At the lower end of the waterfall, there's a larger step, making it ideal for swimming. Be careful in the pools; the current can be quite strong in places.

Tyrifjorden is a picturesque inland lake in the Viken county in southeastern Norway, located about 40 kilometers northwest of Oslo. With a surface area of approximately 139 km², it is the fifth largest lake in the country and has an impressive volume of over 13 km³. The lake's deepest point reaches 295 meters. The region around Tyrifjorden is popular for recreational activities such as hiking, camping, swimming, and fishing. The flora and fauna are also diverse, making it an attractive destination for nature lovers.

The Mørkgonga Nature Reserve is located in Hole and Ringerike and covers 153.9 hectares. Many rare plant species grow here 🌿, especially alpine and heat-loving plants ☀️. A special feature is the European yew (Taxus baccata), whose flexible wood was formerly used for bows and crossbows 🏹.

Caution when climbing through Mørgonga, especially with regard to scree. There is an acute danger of rockfall for hikers scrambling over a rock or for oncoming traffic.

4월 27, 2025, Mørkgonga Gorge Climbing Route
The signage at the bottom of the slope is misleading, as it warns of rockfall at a point that's not even steep yet. Therefore, it's easy to carelessly ignore this warning. Once you're halfway up, you realize that scrambling behind other hikers or even under oncoming traffic becomes a real thrill whenever someone slips over a scree.

⚠️ Caution: Very steep path up to Mørgonga. Danger of rockfall due to loose scree. Sturdy footwear is a must. The route ends with a scramble/climbing section on the steel cable between the rock faces of Mørgonga.

Legendary view. Be sure to wear high walking shoes as the paths are very wet.

Kongens Utsikt - the royal lookout point - is 484 meters above the Tyrifjorden and Steinsfjorden lakes. From here you have a great view over large parts of Ringerike and Hole. King Karl Johan visited this place in 1832, from which the name is derived.
