A wonderful hike along the sea. The view is breathtaking. Highly recommended. Ideal in the early morning hours when it's not so warm in summer.

The most suggestive corner of the Adriatic coast of Salento. From here a dirt road starts that overlaps with the Cammino del Mare and winds up to Otranto along the rocky stretch

Porto Badisco is a pretty cove nestled on the coast of the Adriatic about 10 km south of Otranto.

We spent two nights in Otranto, which meant we could spend a day driving along the coast and a little further inland. Very worthwhile.

Legend has it that two sisters, two local farmers, one day approached the sea to cool off. Having reached the bay of Torre dell'Orso, one of the two enters the water to take a nice swim, but the water, near the rocks, has become treacherous and swirling. The girl gasps and screams for help: her sister can only rush to help her. They swim and swim, and the more they swim the more their efforts seem in vain. When they finally manage to get closer to each other, they are exhausted, without strength. They embrace for the last time, now unable to overcome the fury of the sea, which swallows them and drowns them. However, the god of the sea is sorry for this and has compassion for the two innocent sisters, one who died due to unconsciousness and the other due to brotherly love; thus it transforms them into two stacks, close together for eternity. And today we, on sunny summer mornings as well as on humid winter days, admire these rock giants, almost embracing, stone and salt between sky and sea

Porto Badisco is a seaside resort in Salento, in the municipality of Otranto, and is famous for its bay of sand and rocks, with crystal clear sea and unspoiled nature. Porto Badisco is linked to the legend of the landing place of Aeneas, the Trojan hero who fled from his destroyed city and landed on this coast, as described in Virgil's Aeneid

A corner of Puglia that you don't expect. Far from the roar of the sea there is this small oasis of peace born following the progressive abandonment of the Bauxite quarry. At the end of the 70s the mineral extraction operations stopped and the water began to filter inside the quarry forming the lake. In fact, it is precisely the presence of the mineral that gives the intense colors of this place: the red of the clayey earth and the emerald green of the lake waters.

The Otranto bauxite quarry is located in the Salento hinterland, between Otranto and the area around the famous Punta Palascia lighthouse. The magical and evocative "Red Lake" is often the destination of excursions to admire the suggestive view of the emerald green lake. Bauxite is a mineral from which aluminum is extracted. The Otranto quarry was once an important source of income for the region.

Porto Badisco is a quiet coastal town best known for its fantastic bay with crystal clear waters. According to some, it was here that Aeneas landed after his escape from Troy even if the descriptions of the episode present in the Aeneid do not match the characteristics of this place. Archaeological evidence, however, confirms that the area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic period. Inside the Grotta dei Cervi, one of the most important hypogeal complexes in Europe, there are in fact several wall paintings dating back to that era which testify to the human presence and the variety of fauna present in this area.

Here the Alimini Lakes reach the sea. The lake closest to the coast, called Alimini Grande, is of lagoon origin and is made up of brackish water. The smallest, on the other hand, called Alimini Piccolo or Fontanelle, is fed by underground springs and is therefore composed of fresh water. The two lakes are in communication through a channel called Lu Strittu. The whole lake area is of particular naturalistic importance as it offers shelter to various species of migratory birds in their movements from north to south. The flora surrounding the two basins is also unique and there are very rare plant species.

Once upon a time there lived two wonderful sisters: one day, they went to the sea to seek some coolness and refreshment in the summer heat. Once on the cliff of the Torre dell'orso bay, a fragrant breeze of sea and Scots pine blew so intense that the younger sister felt more and more attracted by the sea, so that captured by the dazzling colors and the inviting coolness, she threw herself into the empty in a desperate act of love. The cries of the girl, who was struggling in the foam, attracted the other sister who in turn threw herself in an attempt to snatch her from death. In a few moments the sea found itself cradling two lifeless bodies. The cries of the two sisters were heard by a fisherman who went to the place, but he saw nothing except, for the first time, two high stacks placed side by side, completely identical, which seemed to embrace.

The road that leads from Otranto to the lighthouse is a provincial road, therefore suitable for all bikes, but it is possible to go down to the lighthouse only if you have a Mtb or a gravel bike (not suitable for bdc because it is a dirt road). If possible, it is worth going down to the lighthouse, stopping sitting on the rock to take a break looking at the immensity of the sea. To be avoided in summer during the hottest hours.

Bauxite is a mineral from which aluminum is obtained. The Otranto quarry was an important source of livelihood for all those who extracted the material during the years in which the site remained in business.
