One of the most representative Spunnulate of the marsh. Example of how the water emerging from the subsoil indicates the presence of abundant fresh water in the Salento subsoil but also the difficulty of accessing it. Destination of migratory avifauna. Wonderful. It is a protected place and (for obvious reasons) bathing is absolutely prohibited.

SALINA MONACI Salina Monaci, part of the Regional Natural Reserves of the Eastern Taranto Coast, was established in 2002 as a protected area, characterized by a salt pan no longer in use, subject to a variation in the water level and formation of extensive salt crusts in the summer season. In 1600, the area was owned by the Benedictine monks of Aversa and later passed to the Imperiali family. In the 19th century and, in particular, after the expulsion of the Bourbons, the Salina came under the control of the State Property Agency. The Salina has survived two reclamation interventions: in 1882, when Avetrana was not included in the drainage program and in the mid-twentieth century, when the intervention was limited due to the scarce economic resources allocated. In 1960 it was separated from the sea with the construction of the Salento coast road, later removed in that stretch with the establishment of the Reserves. The illustrated book "The never-ending story" by Fulvio Filo Schiavoni, a Rotarian friend, tells the story of the place, long disputed, between Manduria and Avetrana.

Torre Colimena (Salina dei Monaci) is a seaside hamlet in the municipality of Manduria, not far from Torre Lapillo. It is a protected nature reserve and is a place not affected by mass tourism and for this reason its landscape is almost uncontaminated: a place rich in natural species, such as flamingos and various types of birds. A quiet place, far from crowded and noisy beaches, an oasis of peace. Once you arrive under the tower, turn left until you find the interrupted road, park and continue on foot.

The Grotta del Cavallo is famous for the archaeological finds of human and animal remains dating back to the Paleolithic. Some of the oldest Homo sapiens in Europe, who lived around 40,000 years ago, were discovered here. The entrance to the cave is not open to the public, but there is a splendid view of the entire coast.

The Greco Roman Fountain of Gallipoli is considered the oldest fountain in Italy. There are doubts about its origins, if dating back to the III BC. or in the Renaissance age. Today it is at the Ponte Antico and very ruined. 5 m high, the coats of arms of Gallipoli, Charles III Bourbon and Philip II are represented on it. There are three mythological scenes, the metamorphoses in sources of Dirce, Salmace and Biblide.

The swamp develops along the coast of Nereto and has a high value and naturalistic interest. One of the many beauties of this place are the "spunnulate", a very rare geological phenomenon in which a karst sinking creates a "lake" of fresh and salt water. These areas have given rise to a unique habitat rich in very interesting botanical and faunal species. In addition to this, among the paths of the Captain's Marsh you can come across beautiful Orchids, wild flowers and expanses of Salicornia, also called sea asparagus. The small bays that can be encountered along the way, enclose the beauty of this place to be discovered. https://www.18meridianoescursioni.it/la-palude-del-capitano-e-le-spunnulate/
