One of the two dolmens of Melendugno: the Dolmen Placa

It is about 300 years old. It seems that during the Bourbon domination the bandits used to meet under its branches. It is 23 meters high with a circumference of 41 meters

The grooves present on the Dolmen Placa and the small hole at the center of the covering slab of the Dolmen Gurgulante (located a few meters in the direction of Melendugno), immediately make one think of a place dedicated to ritual sacrifices, rather than a burial place as has often been hypothesized.

It is the most suggestive tree species of all the Salento flora, belonging to the fagaceae family, such as the chestnut and the beech, which recall some characteristics, such as the considerable size. The Quercia Vallonea di Corigliano in fact, is about 15 meters high and has a crown of 20 meters in diameter, set majestically within a small park which is home, among other things, to numerous events related to the Grika culture. The entry of this tree species, which comes from the Middle East and can only be admired in the Salento area, dates back to the year one thousand and in the local dialect its name becomes valani, which in Greek means "acorn". The ancient tree is characterized precisely by large acorns, surmounted by a dome rich in tannin, a chemical substance used in the past for tanning and making leather, a very common activity in Salento. It is one of the few surviving specimens in the area.
