The German-language television series “Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity” - which I can recommend without reservation - is dedicated to the places with UNESCO World Heritage sites on all continents and eras in short film clips. This includes the “SACRI MONTI” in northern Italy (there are a total of eight of these “Holy Mountains” in Piedmont and a ninth in Lombardy), which are presented to the culture-loving viewer in a 15-minute clip. This can be accessed in the ARD media library at the following link: => https://www.ardmediathek.de/video/schaetze-der-welt/heilige-berge-in-piemont-italien-folge-396/3sat/Y3JpZDovL3N3ci5kZS84ODgxMzc2

The current complex, consisting of a church, bell tower and hermitage, was built in the first half of the 18th century. on a rocky spur, an exceptional panoramic point to embrace, with a single glance, the entire Cusio and the mountains of the eastern coast. For centuries the white granite rock on which the sanctuary stands was used as cutting stone.

The Sacro Monte is located in an extraordinary landscape context, on a wooded promontory that juts out into Lake Orta. Twenty chapels immersed in nature illustrate episodes from the life of San Francesco with sculptures and paintings, distributed along a path that winds along the top of the mountain, opening up spectacular views of the lake and the island of San Giulio. The community's first idea of creating a religious itinerary on the model of the Sacro Monte of Varallo dates back to 1583, but only came to fruition in 1590 thanks to the contribution of the Novara abbot Amico Canobio and the project of the Capuchin architect Cleto da Castelletto Ticino. Between 1593 and 1615 the bishop of Novara Carlo Bascapé became the true protagonist of the construction site, deciding the succession of scenes to be created inside the chapels, establishing the architectural structure of the complex with Cleto da Castelletto and calling artists of notable fame to Orta . The statues and paintings of the Sacro Monte compose scenes of great realism, where the intimate and natural atmospheres typical of early seventeenth-century Lombard art combine with the lively baroque theatricality of the end of the century. Among the artists who worked on the Sacro Monte of Orta, the Fiammenghini, Morazzone, Cristoforo Prestinari, the d'Enrico brothers, Dionigi Bussola and the Nuvolone brothers stand out. The visit route ends inside the church of San Nicolao, a proto-Romanesque building, completely remodeled during the 17th century in imitation of the Lower Basilica of Assisi, which houses the ancient wooden group of the Madonna della Pietà (14th century). The beauty of the landscape, the silence and the harmonious relationship between art, architecture and nature fully reflect Franciscan spirituality.
