Montegiardino: the coat of arms clearly takes up the toponym: "D'azzurro, with three red roses with green leaves and leaves, arranged in a fan, rising from the top of a mountain of three golden peaks". It is the smallest castle of the nine, in size, just 3.31 km², and number of inhabitants, only 793. It borders the castles of Fiorentino and Faetano and the Italian municipalities of Sassofeltrio (PU) and Monte Grimano (PU) .

One of the most evocative points of this Carpegna area. A point of union between nature and man: a magnificent panorama up to the sea and, a stone's throw away, the top of the mountain. The scenario is joined by an infrastructure such as the chairlift which, in reality, does not disturb the balance

Inside the Nature Reserve there is the Grotta di Onferno, 700 m long and 70 m deep, with a difference in height of about 70 m originating from some streams that descending from Monte Croce, reached the chalky cliff, begin an underground path, to resurface more Valley. The exploration of the cave took place in 1916 by Lodovico Quarina, who went up the cave from the resurgence to the sinkhole. Today's guided tours retrace this direction and allow you to admire the typical alabastrines of the chalky caves. Near the exit there are some rooms enlarged by collapse phenomena. In the Quarina Room the vault is animated by mamelons, curious conical structures among the most beautiful and largest in Europe that indicate the base of a layer of plaster. The cave houses the most important bat colony in the region, with eight different species. Since the summer of 1989, the cave has been open to the public, it is a sort of natural tunnel that is easy to access through the two entrances and just as easily walkable (thus unique in Emilia-Romagna). The Trabocchino is one of the numerous carvings that allow access to the summit plateau of Mount Carpegna; it is crossed by the ancient route that connects the town of Carpegna to the hermitage of Madonna del Faggio. On the southern side the slope descends steeply, revealing spectacular banks of stratified rock.

For the visit to the caves bring stuff not to worry if it gets dirty. The passages are narrow and you crawl the rocks. But it is suggestive and worth it. Highly recommended

The ascent of Montegiardino in my opinion is the one with the most important slopes between all the roads leading to S. Marino. You get there passing from Ospedaletto di Coriano and you follow the road of the Marano river park (recently paved), you arrive at Lake Faetano, a little further on there are 2 climbs towards S.Marino, you have to follow the signs to Montegiardino. Ascent of about 9 KM maximum slope 16%
