A beautiful reserve with many paths for walking.

The Collemeluccio reserve is one of the two oriented nature reserves that are part of the "Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo Alto Molise" Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 1977. It is located in the province of Isernia, hosts one of the most beautiful beech woods in Italy and it can be visited with a ring itinerary that starts from the forest center.

This refuge is located about two and a half hours from Isernia and one hour from Pesche. It is inserted in a wonderful natural environment; a few steps from the shed there is an eighteenth-century source.

Located in the countryside of the municipality of the same name in the province of Isernia, it was established with D.M. 04/20/1982. Initially it extended 540 Ha, but following the D.M. 30.12.1983 it was brought to 552 hectares, almost half of the entire municipal territory. The altitude varies between 640 and 1130 m above sea level and the prevailing exposure of the territory is South South-West. The orography varies between soft and harsher environments up to pronounced vertical leaps. The former have a clayey-schistose or soft and friable calcareous geological matrix, the others are formed by massive banks of compact limestone very evident upstream of the town. The reserve is located in central-western Molise, borders the countryside of Isernia and is about 50 km from Campobasso. The paths that skirt and cross it allow the visitor a complete observation for a long range. Peculiar is the geographical position of the Pesche countryside: it ranges over the city of Isernia and the Volturno river valley, the Matese and Mainarde mountains and the mountains overlooking the Roccaraso ski resort. Precisely to better highlight this panoramic feature, some ancient high-altitude mule tracks are being restored, above all improving the bottom, to allow access to the reserve also for hikers and visitors on mountain bikes, as well as to improve surveillance and administration in general.

The inhabited area is Miranda where the cult of Saint Lucia is particularly felt with the festival dedicated to her which takes place on the last Sunday of August. On this occasion, both residents and tourists gather on the mountain of Santa Lucia not only to attend Holy Mass, but also to participate in a festive and convivial outing. The main dish of the day is the traditional "Panonta", a typical Mirandese dish that is absolutely worth trying at least once. It is a loaf cut into several layers, the first of which is stuffed with an omelette, the second with fried sausage, the third with fried bacon (but this ingredient is at the discretion of whoever makes it) and the last with fried peppers. Once garnished, the loaf should be left to rest wrapped in a cloth for an entire night, so that the bread softens and adds flavour.
