The source of the Böhme River is in the Pietzmoor. From there, the river winds its way through Soltau, among other places, before flowing southwest near Walsrode.

The Pietzmoor is highly recommended for hiking. The Heidenschleife offers a good hiking route that includes all the moor's attractions.

A super nice walk offers here through the Pietzmoor. A large parking lot next to the round, well-developed paths - you can see that tourism is not a foreign word.

Pure nature and learn something about the landscape. Also suitable for children (but you should always use the jetty). Parking is sufficiently available and gastronomy also to be found nearby.

Part II Hiking in the Pietzmoor You go on a 5 km long circular walk on boardwalks on a hike through the mysterious moorland landscape and discover this special flora and fauna. Follow the exciting information boards of the Moor Adventure Trail. Walks and walks through the Pietzmoor are attractive all year round. Every season we get a very own impression of this legendary scenery. In the spring, enjoy the "cottongrass blossom", in summer observe the otters and lizards warming themselves on the sunlit footbridges, catch the mystical atmosphere in the autumn mist and relax on snow-covered planks during a walk in clear winter air.

part One The emergence of Pietzmoor The Pietzmoor lies on the southern edge of the nature reserve Lüneburger Heide and today still covers an area of approx. 2.5 km². The emergence of the raised bog was favored by the depression and by water-impermeable clay layers in the underground. Profile surveys conducted in 1975 revealed that the maximum peat thickness was 7.50 meters. Assuming an annual growth of the peat-forming campaigns (peat mosses) of about 1 millimeter, then the age of Pietzmoores is almost 8,000 years. The Pietzmoor has undergone a rather atypical development. It's not, like most other moors, out of a nutrient-rich lake that has turned into a shallow moor and has evolved over time into a bog. Instead, cottongrass, sedum and peat moss species settled here very early in the winter after the Ice Age in a water-rich depression and continued to breed them. This emergence of raised bog is characteristic of many moorlands, with the acidic, siliceous subsoil playing a crucial role. A centuries-long use would almost have meant the end for this gem. Thanks to successful renaturation, the Pietzmoor can now grow again and remains as a "history book of nature".
