At the foot of the Waldbeerenberg in the Hohe Mark, there is a group of strange trees whose shape is reminiscent of dancing witches. Snake-shaped, horizontal, camel-humped, bizarre and around 300 years old, they are between eight and 16 meters high. Real natural monuments!

I can only join HPS54, the descent towards Maria Veen is long and the speed can get enormously high 😅🫣

Drive through former military area and a shortcut from Hülsten to Lavesum. You need power on the bike and a strong drive!!! Neat climb(s), but also nice jagged descents up to 60 km/h 😳

Very nice to drive through here. And after the mountain, it's down to lunch.

Very nice route through the middle of a former military training area

The area of today's Holtwicker Wachholder Heide was originally created by agriculturally used forest areas. Almost every farming community in Westphalia owned such a mark. They had the right to use these marks as grazing land for their cattle, for lumber, and for cutting sods. Over time, the forest disappeared more and more due to overexploitation and a lack of reforestation. Only heather and juniper bushes grew on the emaciated and acidic soil. To date, these extensive heathlands have mostly been reforested and, to a lesser extent, converted into arable land. The Holtwick juniper heath, which has been placed under nature protection, remained as a remnant of this ancient rural cultural landscape.
